AZ Law Pty Ltd (“we”, “us”, or “our”) is committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of personal information entrusted to us.
We are a legal practice and, in certain circumstances, a reporting entity under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) (“AML/CTF Act”). As a result, we are required by law to collect, verify, and retain specific personal information as part of our Know Your Customer (KYC) and customer due diligence obligations.
Your privacy is important to us and we are committed to protecting your privacy. Accordingly, we seek to comply with the Australian Privacy Principles (“APP”) in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), as amended from time to time (“the Act”) and the AML/CTF Act. Information allows us to provide effective and efficient services. Keeping your information secure, and using it only as you would want us to, is a top priority for all of us at AZ Law Pty Ltd. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and disclose personal information in accordance with the Act and the AML/CTF Act, and associated regulations.

We may collect personal information necessary to provide legal services and to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations.
2.1 Identity and Verification Information (KYC)

  • Nationality and residency status
  • Government-issued identification (e.g. passport, driver licence)
  • Source of funds or source of wealth information (where required by law)
2.2 Client and Matter Information
  • Company, trust, partnership, or association details
  • ABN, ACN, or other registration details
  • Beneficial ownership and control information
  • Information relating to legal matters or transactions

  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Postal address
2.4 Sensitive Information
We may collect sensitive information where:
  • it is reasonably necessary for the provision of legal services; or
  • collection is required or authorised by law, including under the AML/CTF Act.
3. How We Collect Personal Information
We collect personal information:
  • Directly from you (including through client onboarding forms, instructions, meetings, or correspondence)
  • From third parties acting on your behalf
  • From identity verification and compliance service providers
  • From public registers and publicly available sources
  • Where required or authorised by law
4. Why We Collect and Use Personal Information
We collect and use personal information for the following purposes:
  • To verify your identity and conduct customer due diligence under the AML/CTF Act
  • To provide legal advice and legal services
  • To comply with legal, regulatory, and professional obligations
  • To manage risk, compliance, and fraud prevention
  • To maintain client records, audits, and regulatory reporting
  • For internal record keeping and communication purposes
  • To maintain and update your contact details where required
If required information is not provided, we may be unable to act for you or continue to provide legal services.
5. Disclosure of Personal Information
Personal information will only be shared if and when it is deemed appropriate. You can give us your consent expressly or it may be implied by your conduct.
Sometimes the law requires us to give out information about you. For example, giving your account details to a Court if we are ordered to do so under a subpoena.
We may disclose personal information to:
  • AUSTRAC, where required under the AML/CTF Act
  • Regulatory authorities
  • Law enforcement agencies where required or authorised by law
  • Identity verification, compliance, or technology service providers
  • Brokers, financial advisors, accountants, agents, or other professional advisers engaged in connection with your matter
We do not disclose personal information for commercial sale.
You hereby consent to our disclosure of personal information to the parties identified above for the limited purposes set out in this Privacy Policy.
6. Legal Professional Privilege and Confidentiality
Nothing in this Privacy Policy is intended to limit or waive legal professional privilege or our duties of confidentiality owed to clients under applicable law and professional conduct rules.
Where permitted by law, disclosures made under the AML/CTF regime do not require notification to clients.
7. Overseas Disclosure
Some service providers (including identity verification or document management systems) may store or process personal information outside Australia.
8. Storage, Security, and Retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.
We have physical, electronic and procedural safeguards to protect your information which is held by us. For example, your personal information is stored in electronic databases requiring logins and passwords. Access to information stored electronically is restricted to staff whose job purpose requires access. We require all staff and associated third parties to maintain the confidentiality of customer information.
Security measures include:
  • Restricted system access controls
  • Secure electronic document management systems
  • Confidentiality obligations imposed on staff and contractors
Under the AML/CTF Act, certain records must be retained for a minimum of seven (7) years, after which information is securely destroyed or de-identified unless otherwise required by law.
9. Access and Correction
You may request access to, or correction of, personal information we hold about you by contacting us using the details below.
Access may be refused in circumstances permitted by the Privacy Act, including where disclosure would:
  • prejudice legal proceedings;
  • reveal privileged information; or
  • be prohibited by law.
We try to ensure that all information we hold about you which we collect, use or disclose is accurate, complete and up to date. You must promptly notify us if there are any changes to your personal information.
You may ask us at any time to correct personal information held by us about you, which you believe is incorrect or out of date. We will deal with your request within a reasonable time.
10. Complaints
If you believe your privacy has been breached, you may lodge a complaint with us. We will investigate and respond within a reasonable timeframe.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The most current version will be published on our website.
